I am a man of (not much) wealth, and taste.
My name is Alex Reid, I daily drive a 28 year old Volkswagen Golf 4 door.
My fun summer car is a V12 Jaguar convertible,
and I’m reviving a 1968 Datsun Roadster, my dream car.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I’ve been trying to update people on the progress of restoring this almost 50 year old mess, but I’m seriously lagging behind!
The Jag XJS seems to be a popular topic around here, so ask me anything about mine!
People have been complaining that old cars are unreliable and that you can’t daily drive them, that’s total crap!
So here I stand before you, a renaissance man, living life through the rose coloured glasses of the past. I’m going to attempt to be a more active member of this wonderful community.

But can you see why kids love the taste of cinnamon toast crunch?

It’s definitely the SUGAR

Welcome! I’ll l look forward to hearing about the Jag restoration.

The Jaguar is in perfect shape, it needs no restoration, the Datsun is the one that needs the help.

That Datsun ... friend’s dad had one growing up. Like nothing else I’d seen.
Any electrical/wiring issues with the Jaaaag?

Welcome!

I’m in love with my Datsun :)
The Jag has only had 1 electrical issue so far, and that was a couple of dirty contacts on the window switches, other than that, it’s flawless!

So when are you going to combine all three to make a Frankencar called the Jagsunwagon Golf XJS-Roadster?

“The Jag has only had 1 electrical issue so far,”
I initially read that as “the Jag has only had 1 electrical fire so far”
LOL

Great trio of machines you have.

Does perfect shape mean that it starts on the third try instead of the fourth?

How can anyone not want one?

Rode in one of those out to the mountains for a ski trip, comfy machine!

Got any interior shots of your Jag? What year is it?
![]() 02/02/2016 at 17:46 |

I have one, and I still want more.

Pleased to meet you. Hope you guess my PSI.

Haha, actually every myth about the Jag seems to be unfounded at this point. It starts first crank every time, and is comfortably and surprisingly sporty!

I’ll refer you to the post I made when I first got it: http://oppositelock.kinja.com/oppo-ive-gone-…
It’s a 1989 model year.

does your jag have the optional car phone? props by the way I was considering one of those but the mechanicals scared me off.

People have been complaining that old cars are unreliable and that you can’t daily drive them, that’s total crap!
I agree you can daily drive them, but there’s only so much you can do to fight against a cars slide towards unplanned disassembly.
Rust, worn bearings, perished rubber and plastics, weather damaged paint, difficult and or expensive second hand parts because OEM has long since discontinued.
Sure you can maintain a car so it never breaks down, but you’re still gonna spend more time under it than a 2013 Honda.

I congratulate you and offer best wishes with your British unicorn.
Also I’m a tad jealous because you have three really cool cars.

What’s confusing you is the, nature of my engine

hi alex...
just sold my XJS this past fall. :( it was the first car that i ever fell in love with... you know as a child.
she drove me all around the country. literally.
and then a bunch of photos from the return trip here:
http://oppositelock.kinja.com/roadtrip-monta…
they can be driven daily. but they do require some taking care... i just didn’t have the garage space to keep her moving as i needed to. :(
welcome!

A lot of people bitched when Ford bought Jaguar. But as I have said before, there was at least one good aspect ... Ford can build a wiring harness. There was a lot they did wrong in the mid-90s, but making wiring harnesses wasn’t one of them.

Ah, I misread. Well then, I’m jealous.

You, are a true legend. Love your car!
![]() 02/02/2016 at 19:13 |

Don’t be too jealous, the work I’ve had to do on the Datsun more than makes up for the condition of the Jag, haha!
![]() 02/02/2016 at 19:14 |

This is true, mine however, is not a Ford, so we’ll see what the future holds!

I’d rather spend days under my Jaguar than buy a modern transportation appliance.
P.S, Your MR2 is a beaut!

You’re not wrong. I’m envious of your XJS and the Datto, how is the XJS to work on? Even with such a long bonnet there’s not much room after the V12 if stuffed in there.
and thanks, All my examples were personal experience either on that MR2 or the one I had before it haha. Daily driven.. except for the last week where I’ve been waiting on parts to get here from Japan.

Luckily I haven’t had to work on it at all, and the real problem with the engine bay is that the engine is underneath all the wires and fuel stuff, so it’ll be a real mess if anything goes wrong. Fingers crossed!
